Warm greetings from sunny Florida!
I commend you for your effort to bring in speakers to increase disability awareness among your staff and students.
I myself became more intimately and increasingly aware of disabilities when I worked for Camp Challenge personally caring for the disabled 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Throughout my time working for Camp Challenge, I cared for all ages of disabled persons. I began with children, all of whom were in wheelchairs and one boy whom I had to wake up at 6am with and feed by a G-Tube every 3 hours. This small boy could not talk and looked left to say yes and right to say no. Yet throughout our daily social and physical activities “Ug” (as he was nicknamed) showed much personality – swimming in the pool, participating in drama skits and racing with his camp counselor (me) in a wheelchair race. It was amazing to see Ug’s personality shine and radiate through despite his disability.
I have so many more stories like this to share with different age groups.
It would be an honor and joy to speak to your students and staff.
