When I entered college and went through growing pains, I realized I was in store for some new challenges for which I had never been forewarned. My parents encouraged my academic success throughout high-school into college, but never bothered to prepare me for the rigors of college life and academics.

There is a big difference in college between knowing you “what” you need to do and knowing “how” to do it. Unfortunately many college professors (perhaps by reason of being in the trenches of academia too long) are not always so helpful in that regard. Plus it is often hard to find someone as a college student who you can relate to who also has some intelligence who can guide and counsel you.

Sadly even college counselors sometimes treat you like another problem in their caseload rather than a genuine person needing someone with a heart to talk to. That being said here are some success secrets to help any college student overcome adversity on their university campus.

1. Stay calm and cool.

When you stay calm and cool, what you need to do will more easily come to you.

Just acknowledge and recognize your present problem, after which set in your heart the intention to tackle it once you know what to do. Upon setting your intent to tackle and deal with this problem, you assuredly will eventually figure it out and take it out!

2. Listen intently, ask questions, and seek out intelligent people.

The more you listen, the more you learn. Those two ears attached to the side of your head are there for a reason. Unfortunately most people prefer to move their mouth a million miles a minute to vocalize their problem, rather than solve it.

Problem solvers however know the secret to solving problems successfully is to quietly process the problem, design a strategy to solving it, and inviting intelligent people around you to help you figure out how to tackle it.

Humbly yourself and ask questions of those around, preferably those with intelligence who can provide good advice and tell you what they would do. As you listen and gain varying perspectives, eventually intuitively it will come to you what it is you should do.

3. Don’t despise the process as you sort through the pieces.

Everybody wants to be a college student success story, but success doesn’t come overnight. You have to make the grades for four years and remain focused through the many attractive distractions throughout college.

As in obtaining a degree, wherein is required the completion of various coursework, overcoming adversity sometimes requires life work and internal home work as you sort through the pieces to your ordeal.

When my mom died prematurely due to a drunk driver hitting her, I had to process some of my unanswered questions and find closure. This was not done easily and took time. Likewise must you most likely give yourself some time to sort through the personal pieces and elements to that which is presently testing and challenging you. Embrace the process regardless of the present pain, knowing assuredly that as you do you will grow through and get up above your problem eventually.

Once you rise above it, you will then be able to objectively look down and back at it to see more clearly. When that time comes, you will simultaneously be able to comfort and lift others currently suffering in a similar dilemma as you. Therefore your present suffering is not in vain, as truly it will empower you to help others just the same.

4. Celebrate your progress.

Celebrate your small successes and steps forward.

When I was hit by a drunk driver (another drunk driving accident years after my mom was killed) and my car was totaled, I was injured physically and great crushed financially. I was already suffering financially before the accident. The drunk driving accident however pushed me over the edge. Suddenly I was now having to use rental cars for months, fight my insurance company for payment, visit medical doctors continually, and sort through stacks of legal documents and medical bills nonstop.

At one point I foolishly said and thought it would have been better if the drunk driver would have killed me, because the pain of the present situation after the accident was crushing and killing me. It is safe to say I was overwhelmed and miserable.

Nevertheless serendipitously a car dealer showed up in my life and offered to personally finance a car for me to buy (since my credit was ruined after the accident and I couldn’t get a decent loan from a car dealer). I was so thankful and appreciative.

Nevertheless I had to make car payments in the range of $2,000 a month, while trying to live off a teaching salary of $2,600 a month and pay a mortgage on my house. Incidentally, those 6 months were very challenging.

Yet when I finally made that last car payment, I rejoiced and sighed a sigh of relief.

Sometimes it is the little things in life that we most take for granted, but suddenly begin to appreciate when they are swiftly removed from us.

I therefore gave thanks to God and rejoiced upon making that final car payment.

What are you thankful for today? As you begin to give thanks something will arise within you, whereby you will be lifted above your adversity and the ability to overcome will mightily move you forward.

Cultivate an attitude of gratitude and apply these marvelous success secrets to work miracles in your life and propel you happily and successfully through college into your dream career!

Wishing you great and continued success!

When I left the comforts of home to begin my college education, I was suddenly overwhelmed by the many things I had to do just to survive daily, not to mention tackle my coursework and hit the books to be successful in my college classes.

My out into the real world as a college student meant I suddenly had to locate a suitable apartment, pay rent, buy my own groceries, set up my water & electricity provider, deal with transportation, service my car, buy a college parking permit, complete numerous applications and documents to secure the before mentioned, wash my clothes, and most importantly attend class daily and adequately study to succeed as a college student.

To say the least at first it was overwhelming. Yet here is what I quickly learned about college success and how to overcome adversity on the university.

1. See problems as opportunities for personal growth and development.

Undoubtedly as you grow into adulthood (of which being a college student is just a part), every opportunity and pursuit you shall joyfully go after will be joined with a series of problem solving opportunities that will test you.

Being tested is not something we look for, nor delight in. Yet as college students, we should expect to be tested not just in the classroom, but even more so by life itself. In fact, I learned in college that some of the biggest breakthroughs and transformations in my personal character came by way of entering the real world beyond that which I was accomplishing in the classroom.

Real world challenges are not always as easily solved as a test question on an exam within academia at college. Nevertheless as you stay the course and buckle down to endure the process you will be amazed at your personal growth and progress into adult life.

Let’s face it, when we are teenagers protected by our parents and living at home, we think we know it all. When we launch out into the real world to live on our own, we experience a rude awakening as we collide with life as it really is (apart from and beyond what our ego, while living at home thought life to be).

When that wake up call comes, embrace adversity and problems merely as opportunities to become more self-aware and discover areas of personal growth that are needed within your life. Many assume they are all that and project an air of adulthood and being established. However when push comes to shove, we often realize when undergoing the fiery pressures of life that we often are not as mature as we said we were.

2. Remain humble, respect others, and recognize that you need help.

Humility opens up hearts to graciously favor and help you. Humility is your opportunity to reveal to others tenderly that you need help and respect their input and contribution into your life. Respecting others and showing honor to those to whom it is due, will birth maturity in you.

It is strange how this works, but know for sure when you honor others it always boomerangs somehow back to you in many ways. Instead of worrying about appearing foolish, why not humble yourself and seek the help you know you need to get over the hump you currently are facing?

Acknowledge and recognize you have need of others to get where you are going in life. If you have been taking your parents, advisors, teachers, and friends for granted… go home, pick up the phone, and call them. Tell them you are sorry and pour out your most sincere apology.

When you do, healing will come to you and your family. Your heart will become more pliable, flexible, and sober. Then you can truly begin to enter a new level of personal self-mastery as you humbly recognize others success, your need of their input into your life, and that you are never an island unto yourself.

3. Hold to your heartfelt desire and vision, but let the blueprint and road map evolve to lead you to your personal promised land.

Many times we get a glimpse into our future, behold a vision, and begin wholeheartedly to journey to our desirable promised land. We diligently do all that we know to do, but somewhere along the way we lose our fire and desire. Our passion dwindles and we begin to die inside.

This is when you must reconnect with your true deepest desire that initially captivated your heart. Only you know where, how, and when you became pregnant with purpose and that baby lept inside of you!

Perhaps along the way, as you attended to the details to make the dream a reality, you became discouraged and listened to naysayers who dwarfed your dream. If so, don’t allow anybody’s opinion diminish you, neither allow people to put their map on your life.

Breakout and break forth into your dream once again! Be free to breathe, believe, and become! With faith like a child, let your dream again come alive and go after it wholeheartedly, unashamedly, full force with the zeal of a ferocious tiger looking for food.

Let that dream feed and sustain you, being the reason you awake with passion every morning.

Remember as you journey toward your desirable outcome and vision that it doesn’t necessarily have to happen as you originally thought. Don’t become rigid and frigid about the process. Allow the process and pathway to serendipitously and supernaturally evolve. Don’t box yourself in by premeditating how you think it must be and thereby limiting yourself.

Be open to crossing paths with new people, even those who are not outwardly packaged according to your personal preference, to co-labor with you and assist you in route to the fulfillment of your dream. After all, every dream requires a dream team. Failure is always an orphan, but success has many fathers.

Your college success as a student will be no different. Therefore happily and courageously embrace any and every form of adversity as you continue with your college, remembering that adversity is part of your university education and a means by which you shall move one step close to living your dreams.

Overcoming Adversity Speaker to Revolutionize Your World – a Keynote to Empower You!

Paul F. Davis understands what it is to struggle and overcome adversity. Paul therefore can deeply touch and mightily transform humanity.

Paul’s selfless accomplishments and worldwide service in some of the most devastated regions on earth makes him an unforgettable speaker able to captivate any audience.

Paul F. Davis was born with pneumonia, after which he lived in an oxygen tent until he gained the strength to endure the outside elements. Paul cried so much during his infancy, he gave himself a hernia which required surgery to repair.
Once in the earth instead of ceasing, Paul’s struggles only intensified. His mother divorced his dad and became an alcoholic and drug addict. Growing up, Paul says, “My mom was either in one of three places: the bar getting drunk, in jail behind bars, or in a mental ward receiving rehabilitation.”

In the absence of his mother and father, Paul grew up with his maternal grandparents. Though Paul’s grandparents adored and cared wonderfully for him, they simultaneously battled to help Paul’s mother recover from substance abuse and mental illness caused by it. This was very embarrassing and difficult for Paul to endure as a youth growing up.

When Paul’s father remarried and gained custody of him, Paul had a hard time getting along with his step-mother who refused to pamper and spoil him as did his grandparents. Once Paul’s parents relocated him from Orlando to live in the country, at the age of 12 years Paul battled childhood depression and for a short while even contemplated suicide he so hated his life.

Nevertheless Paul determined to cultivate inner happiness, overcome his circumstances, and make something of his life. Paul became the most-improved student in 6th grade, excelled at baseball making the all-stars and leading his team to 1st place, winning the most games of any pitcher in the league.

Paul also reconciled with his step-mother who today he affectionately calls “Mom” and has a special relationship with. As for his grandparents, Paul during his adult life cared for them for 2 years before they passed as Paul didn’t want to put them in a nursing home after they were so good to him growing up.

Though Paul after 5 years of marriage suffered a horrible divorce due to his ex-wife’s infidelity and adulterous affair, he forgave her and happily moved on with his life. During his personal ground zero, Paul wrote Breakthrough For a Broken Heart empowering people just like him to overcome their disappointments and blossom into their dreams!

Today Paul is again happily married to the love of his life Karla, a gorgeous Canadian who is all he ever dreamed of in a wife. The two are traveling throughout the globe revolutionizing their world, making an amazing difference in the lives of people everywhere they go!
