TV Guide and NY Times say Oprah Winfrey’s Empire is Crumbling

TV Guide’s Chloe Tse article dated 05-27-2008 reports tremors in Oprah’s media empire.

According to TV Guide Winfrey’s new-age spiritualism and political persuasion is jeopardizing her marketability in the media, thereby diminishing her status.

Perhaps Winfrey’s longtime reign over the media is coming to an abrupt end. For so long revered as nearly a saint because of her uplifting programming, Oprah is now beginning to receive criticism for her views. It has often been said that one should not talk about their religion and politics. Oprah is defying the odds and daring to do both.

I salute her for her authenticity and boldness to express her individuality. Yet doing so is simultaneously hurting her marketability. Nevertheless on the flip side of that argument, we do well to remember that controversy does sell. Who knows the queen of TV could remake herself into an activist for worthy causes and a voice against social injustice. Nobody can dispute Oprah has done and is doing a lot of good in the world. And with such influence why shouldn’t she let her voice be heard?

The New York Times says Oprah’s choices are gaining skepticism and audiences are tuning out. According to Nielson Media Research, for the third straight year in a row, Oprah is experiencing a decline in audience viewers.

Research shows Oprah’s program has dropped 7% of its viewers this year alone. Oprah’s other projects also seem to be suffering. For example her reality show Oprah’s Big Give debuted this winter with a huge audience and beat every program on television except for American Idol, but also experienced the loss of almost a third of its audience.

Winfrey’s readership of O her magazine, which you would think to have increased with the nonstop promotion of Tolle’s book, suffered a beating and loss of 10% over the last 3 years according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations.

Even Oprah’s favorite and highly promoted books in her book club are suffering harsh criticism. Apparently Oprah either didn’t adequately study the demographics of her viewers, or disregarded her viewers beliefs altogether. Women in the deep south who heavily watch Oprah’s program are typically Christian and many supporters of Senator Hillary Clinton.  Hence Oprah has cut her own throat by alienating Christendom with her new age books and shows, while simultaneously disenchanting white women when she endorsed Barak Obama for President.

As a Christian who read “A New Earth” and found it a in meaningful book, I understand both how Oprah feels and religious folks who don’t play around with their faith. Certainly not all Christians can eat the fish and spit out the bones when reading spiritual truths originating from another ideological orbit. Politically Americans aren’t very tolerant or understanding either, as evidenced by the great political divide in our country between Republicans and Democrats.

I commend Oprah for being true to what she believes in and bold enough to share what she thinks will empower people to live better lives. Her intentions and motives are certainly pure. If Oprah were solely money motivated, she would not continue to promote her spiritual and political views. Yet being already established financially, Oprah is embarking upon larger more meaningful missions to change the world. O Ambassadors is just one new endeavor Oprah is partnering with Free the Children to liberate and educate kids worldwide.

Hopefully Oprah who says she is a Christian will not find problems with parents concerned about their children getting sold new-age ideas. I think Oprah is doing a great work and deserves our support. Yet at the same time we who have beliefs of our own should not be any less vocal than Oprah.

Anything worth having in life requires a sacrifice. For Oprah it is a drop in viewer ratings, book sales, and magazine distribution. Nevertheless the rewards of the sacrifice should be sufficient to warrant the losses. Often we must first be willing to lose in order to win.

It cannot be disputed that ultimately we attract what we are. We cannot please everyone and succeed. We are at our best when we are true to ourselves and transparent about it. That Oprah is and that is why we love her.

Beyond touching hearts and putting tears in our eyes, Oprah also makes people think. Now raising eyebrows and making us scratch our heads, Oprah is finding herself as she further evolves. She recently said on her program that she admits to not having enough time to truly enjoy herself.  Perhaps as Oprah becomes more present and lets go of the ambition of sustaining her empire, critics will be silenced and her true spirit will emerge in purity untainted from the labels many have tried to presumptuously give her.

Dividing audiences is not always a bad thing as even the Word of God itself divides, while exposing our hearts (see Hebrews 4:12). Although Oprah’s television audience is predominately middle-aged white women who support Senator Hillary Clinton, most Americans are awaking to the reality that we need some color in the White House to truly get real and heal the homeland.

Angry criticism of new-age spiritualism and political disputes though a common message thread on the message boards from her website, Oprah will continue to transcend the accusations and come out on top as she honors the God of truth.  Love rejoices in the truth and we should do no less.

Next up for Oprah is OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network. featuring programming that will reflect Winfrey’s vision of what she considers empowering programming.

You can’t go wrong when you touch, teach, and transform your audience.

It’s not about being the queen of the media as much as it is about living a meaningful life of purpose to impact humanity.

High School Class Reunion – Thoughts and Reflections

I’ve been bad by not staying in touch with my high school classmates. Yet had I done so I may not have grown into the man I now am. Some 20 years later I can truly enjoy meeting up with my high school mates and not just reflect on the past but rejoice in our future developments.

My Dad always told me the reunions got better at 20 years and beyond as much of the pretense had died by then and people mellowed out.

As for me I graduated from Clermont High School, class of 1987.  I was voted the funniest in my class. I guess because I was a bit of a clown and somewhat clueless about life in general. I’m still growing up today! LOL

Confrontation is Kind, Not Cruel

Confrontation is not cruel, but kind
Otherwise you will remain pitifully blind
Blind to your own foolishness and deception
Blind to your own agenda and motivation
Blind to your people skills and offenses caused
Blind to your self-absorbed nature and flaws
Blindness is not a desirable trait, nor is it great
Therefore when someone lovingly gets in your face
Don’t get your back and dander up, nor be an ingrate
Because they’re helping you to improve your state
To reverse the deadly curse and bless your life’s fate
Otherwise you will blindly carry on until it’s too late
Only to awake one day alone with no love in your home
No money in your bank account and no goodness in life
Therefore when confrontation comes receive it humbly
Before getting angry and allowing it to produce strife
Let confrontation for righteousness sake make you great.

Spike Lee in Cannes Accuses Clint Eastwood of White Washing World War 2

*During a press conference in Cannes on Tuesday, filmmaker Spike Lee took director Clint Eastwood to task for failing to include a single African American soldier in his two recent WWII-themed films. Although hundreds of blacks fought in the battle for the Japanese island of Iwo Jima in 1945, none were present in Eastwood’s two movies about the historic struggle, “Flags Of Our Fathers” and “Letters From Iwo Jima.”

Perhaps getting some color in the White House will be good for America. Certainly having a black man in the White House will be good for the world who presently hate the United States according to Donad Trump who spoke candidly on the Big Idea about the failures of the Bush administration.

Making Bricks for Pharoah

Oh, no my wonderful Lord

We’re making bricks for Pharoah

Jehovah-jireh don’t delay to show

Your mighty power so all may know

That you provide for your people abundantly

Once again come forth and open the Red Sea

Provide miraculously and pay taxes supernaturally

Open the mouths of fish to cough up cash happily

As in times past as you did for the apostle Peter

Don’t let financial constraints silence and deter

Your people from seeking first the kingdom of God

Show yourself strong so greedy creditors will applaud

Let debt cancellation and cash flow magnificently

Let financial acumen and skill break forth intuitively

Within your people’s hearts and minds spiritually

Creative ideas to solve all our monetary problems

Divine appointments, alignment, and relationships

So we can rejoice, stay afloat, and not be a sinking ship

El Shaddai the nourishing one Father to whom we come

Help us because of our endless toil life is no more fun

Grievously vexed by our employers we cry for liberation

We need far more than the power of the resurrection

We also need wisdom, wealth, prosperity, and satisfaction

Alleviation from this gruesome plight of financial despair

Arise for your namesake oh God and show us you care

Before stress and strain prematurely grays our lovely hair

Or makes it fall out entirely as we worry and agonize daily

No more do we wish to make bricks for an oppressive Pharoah

Arise dear Lord so with the Great Commission we can boldly go

And preach the Good News of Christ throughout the entire earth

Telling all souls the glories of your name and about the new birth.

Dream on! Dream on!

On May 21, 2008 just before awaking I had a dream wherein I Pastor Benny Hinn laid hands on me and briefly prayed for me saying, “Dream on! Dream on!”

Upon grabbing my Strong’s Concordance to do a word study of “dream” in the Hebrew I noticed the following definitions – to prop up, to bind firmly, to be plump, make plump, to be in good liking, and to recover.

That being said may the dream of God arise in you and enable you to fully recover from what you’ve been going through. May God Almighty arise in you and cause your gifts, talents, and abilities to flourish in the earth. Blossom like a radiant and beautiful flower.

For those of you weary in well doing and down trodden by life’s overwhelming circumstances, I pray that Jesus by the power of His Holy Spirit will wrap His arms of love around you, comfort, heal, nourish, and restore you to a state of wholeness.

Rest and rejoice in the Lord.  The battle belongs to the Lord.  Let the power of the resurrection flood to overflowing your spirit and soul, making you whole!

Breathe and believe.  Only believe and you will see the glory of God (John 11:40).

Truly with God all things are possible (Mark 10:27).

Senator John McCain Courts NRA – National Rifle Association, Good or Bad for America?

I noticed Senator John McCain recently spoke to the NRA (National Rifle Association) expressing his support of the 2nd Amendment’s rights to bear arms.

Good or bad for America? Certainly we as a country have seen more killings and incarcerations than any nation on earth. Something NOT to be proud about.

Yet taking away good peoples guns maybe isn’t the answer either. If only the bad guys have guns and some local cops call in sick and the police force is understaffed, where does that leave we the people? If you’re living out in the country and need to protect yourself against wild animals, shouldn’t you be allowed to have a gun?

On the other hand it’s organizations like the NRA that enable guns to be sold and freely in circulation for purchase in the first place.  If guns weren’t able to be so easily bought, high school murders and college rage shootings wouldn’t be happening. Moreover the bad guys wouldn’t be able to get their hands on “a piece” as easily.

I’m very undecided on the matter frankly, but I do realize and know something has got to be done and quick.

Your thoughts on the matter?
